POSITION
A Project Archaeologist (Research Associate III Special) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is located at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District, Willamette Valley Project, located in Oregon.
ORGANIZATION
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide support at 13 reservoir lands within the Willamette Valley Projects, located in Oregon. Site monitoring and records update to observe and record site conditions on required standardized forms.
Provide small-scale identification surveys of archaeological and architectural resources and limited archaeological site evaluations for National Register of Historic Places eligibility. The determinations will be for sites, buildings or structures that may be affected by projects identified during the environmental impact review process.
Support all aspects of integrated cultural resources management in compliance with Federal preservation law governing the protection and preservation of historic properties with the least impact on the Corps’ mission. The candidate shall capture location information regarding area inventories, shovel test pits, and other relevant data on government provided equipment.
Prepare and provide written reports, site form documentation and updates and other correspondence as requested throughout the period of performance.
Investigate, report, and consult on known sites, late discoveries and inadvertent finds, and review artifact curation and monitoring as well as visit sites and record data on the condition of archaeological sites in accordance with.
Gather existing cultural data from SHPO, and from US Forest Service for co-managed lands.
Maintain electronic and paper records and files, and provide input to maintain Geographic Information System (GIS) data related to cultural resources. The candidate shall utilize, maintain existing and create new GIS layer data in ArcView (and update data as it becomes available) to prepare project maps to reflect cultural resources operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate must be able to walk over uneven terrain in inclement weather. The position may also require bending, climbing, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1) The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
2) Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field with archaeology or anthropology emphasis and five years of post-graduation professional experience are required.
3) Experience with GPS/GIS and Access database is required. Demonstrated knowledge of Pacific Northwest U.S. prehistory and history the ability to conduct archaeological site analysis, survey and data recovery, report preparation, and presentation is necessary.
4) Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
1) Excellent oral and written communication skills are helpful.
2) Demonstrated expertise in the application of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
(NHPA) and expertise in the application of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is desired.
3) Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the Archeological Resources Protection Act
4) Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) and
the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)
5) Demonstrated knowledge of the nomination process for the National Register of Historic Places and of the application of the criteria for eligibility is beneficial.
6) Experience with cultural resources management on Department of Defense lands is desired.

SALARY
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Annual salary range $53,000-$55,000. Continuation of the position is dependent on the receipt of funding from the sponsor for archaeological efforts at Willamette Valley, OR.
