[ShovelBums.Org] Archaeological Survey and “Shovel Test” Opportunity–Columbus, OH

Posted December 30, 2016 in Archaeology and CRM Jobs

The purpose of this portion of the investigations is to apply approved archaeological field and laboratory methods to determine if archaeological sites are present within the defined project areas in accordance with state and federal guidelines for archaeological inventory and to obtain

Ohio State Historic Preservation Office concurrence.

The site is approximately 18 acres in size and consists entirely of recent construction.

Well over 50 percent of the site has been disturbed by construction and demolition of buildings (no longer extant) as well as the construction of the existing buildings. An archaeological survey will be conducted along with hand excavated shovel test pits (STP’s), following the Ohio SHPO’s Archaeology Guidelines. All STP’s shall be screened through ¼ inch hardware cloth. Changes in depth of soil colors and textures shall be recorded on standard STP forms with reference to Munsell color code descriptions. Cultural materials recovered shall be collected and the provenience recorded in field notes. Locations of all STP’s shall be recorded using a GPS device.

We are seeking a Department of the Interior Field Archeologist-qualified Team Lead and a second Field Archeologist Secondary to perform this function. We anticipate operations to commence in April 2017.
