We are looking for a highly qualified individual for a 5 month internship with the Conservation and Land Management (CLM) Internship Program. The archeology intern will serve on the Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) crew for the Prineville District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). AIM is a vegetation and soil data collection and analysis project designed to help the BLM make informed decisions on the effectiveness of the Oregon Greater Sage-grouse Approved Resource Management Plan Amendment, grazing allotment permit renewals, and removal of juniper in sage-grouse habitat. The archaeology intern will function as both an AIM crew member and an archaeologist. The candidate must be a quick learner; however, knowledge of the AIM project prior to hiring is not necessary.

Position Responsibilities:
The primary duties will include 1) completing pre-field research to obtain information about cultural resources within project areas; 2) completing cultural resource inventory/survey to identify archaeological materials (both prehistoric and historic) and paleontology resources, 3) implementing the AIM project and filling out the necessary paperwork, 4) ensuring archaeological resources are avoided and protected during implementation of AIM procedures, 5) recording and documenting archaeological sites found using District and State forms, and 6) completing data entry and preparing reports, maps, and photographs pertaining to the inventory.
Once at the location, the crew will follow AIM protocol which includes: setting plots; reading line point transects; identifying and inventorying vegetation down to the species level; gather vegetation height, horizontal cover, soil stability, sagebrush shape, and canopy gap; and digging a pit to gather soil horizon data to verify the ecological site description. Data will be entered into a tablet. In addition the archaeology crew member will conduct a cultural resource survey in a predetermined area prior to AIM plot implementation to ensure that no cultural resources are present. If cultural resources are found, a new plot location will be determined devoid of cultural resources, and the cultural resource material will be recorded. The archaeological crew member’s primary responsibility will be to ensure the avoidance of cultural resource sites.

Qualifications:
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in anthropology with a focus in archaeology and a field school/field experience. The selected intern will have to be able to work successfully as an individual or as part of a team. Knowledge of archaeological method and theory will be necessary. Experience in cultural resource survey and site identification and recording will also be necessary. The AIM protocol requires the technician hike up to three miles one way with monitoring equipment to randomly selected locations, often in mountainous terrain. Overnight backcountry camping may be required one or two nights a week over the course of the project. Good communication, equipment, and computer skills will be a necessary and important part of the job.
