AmeriCorps Member(s) will provide national service at Humboldt-Toiyabe
National Forest’s Ruby Mountain Ranger District, a host site for Great
Basin Institute’s AmeriCorps Program.

Description:
The Great Basin Institute, a Reno-based 501(c) 3 non-profit organization,
is hiring two (2) Cultural Resource Field Technicians to join our
AmeriCorps Intern Program. The Technicians will provide support to the
Overland Pass Habitat Improvement Project. The project entails a variety of
work including pre-field background research, archaeological survey, site
monitoring, report writing, database management and record keeping. All new
sites will be documented on site records, photographed, mapped and
illustrated as needed. Previously recorded sites will have new site records
completed if needed. The two technicians will be working as part of a three
person crew under one GBI Crew Chief. The crew will conduct Section 106
surveys on up to 3,000 acres using 30-meter transects. The crew will assist
a Forest Service Archeologist out of Elko, Nevada to complete this project.

Tent camping will be required during all periods of fieldwork for up to 8
days at a time.

Compensation and Timeline:
• These are AmeriCorps positions, and members receive a living stipend of
$10,611. The living stipend is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid
to members bi-weekly throughout their term of service. Upon completion of
the 25-week AmeriCorps term of service members shall receive a Segal
AmeriCorps Education Award valued at $2,887.50 that can be used to pay off
qualified student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college
or program.
• Members will receive a $75/week housing stipend; $15 per diem when field
camping and Affordable Care Act compliant health insurance.
• Timeline: 25-week appointment beginning May 1, 2017 and ending October
20, 2017.
• Full-time, up to 40 hours per week.

Location:
The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (H-T) is comprised of over 6 million
acres, which makes it the largest National Forest in the lower 48 states,
and is located throughout the state of Nevada and a small portion of
eastern California. Many habitats and ecosystems exist within the H-T:
sparkling mountain streams and glacial lakes, the high elevation desert of
the Great Basin, flower-filled meadows, and snow-covered mountain peaks.
The duty station for this project is the U.S. Forest Service office located
at 660 S. 12th St. Suite 108, Elko, NV 89801.

Qualifications:
• Educational and/or field experiences related to archeology, anthropology,
indigenous peoples studies, or related field;
• Map reading experience and ability to use a compass;
• Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct
archaeological site surveys, including:
• Sketching a site map to scale;
• Recording on standard site form (experience with IMACS helpful);
• Photographing and using a photo log;
• Using GPS (Trimble) equipment proficiently to record artifact and feature
locations, as well as site boundaries;
• Figuring out location and routes into and out of project areas; and
• Drawing artifacts or structures as needed.
• Experience working in the Great Basin, desirable;
• Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and
electronic field data loggers;
• Experience with ESRI® ArcMap 10, desirable;
• Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented;
• Good verbal communication and writing skills that reflect critical
thinking;
• Timeliness and professionalism when conducting work assignments based
upon established standards and timelines;
• Self-motivated with ability to maintain a positive and professional
attitude while working in harsh and rapidly changing environments, camping
in the backcountry for consecutive days, working in all types of weather
conditions, and traversing uneven terrain, and be in overall good physical
condition;
• Practice safe behavior, in both field and office settings, in accordance
with established procedures;
• Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to
operate a 4WD vehicle on- or off-road, if required; and
• Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal

resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education
Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time
education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW)
and federal criminal background checks, (4) adhere to the rules,
regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service
Agreement; and (5) will not engage in any prohibited activities as listed
in the Member Service Agreement.
