The Great Basin Institute, in collaboration with the Bureau of Land
Management Southern Nevada District, is recruiting two Archaeology
Technicians for southern Nevada. This position will be responsible for
supporting a variety of activities related primarily to field survey
workload targets. Specific tasks include: (1) Assist District
archaeologists with field inventories; (2) maintain and update an MS Access
database that is accessible to Southern Nevada District archaeologists; (4)
maintain and update the GIS database as needed; (3) maintain and update
cultural paper files as needed; (5) coordinate with the Southern Nevada
District Archaeologist to identify sites that will need to be monitored,
write-up monitoring forms, and update site forms when necessary; (6)
coordinate with the Southern Nevada District Archaeologist to identify
areas for National Historic Preservation Act, Section 110, inventory: write
reports and sites forms in compliance with the latest edition of the
Guidelines and Standards for Archaeological Inventory as needed; and (7)
support a report scanning project in which BLM reports are scanned and
sites are checked for inclusion into an electronic system. Prior experience
and knowledge of historic and prehistoric Mojave archaeology are desired to
expedite field data collection.

Timeline:
o 6 month appointment starting January 2017
o 40 hours per week; some overtime may occasionally be required

Compensation:
o $17/hour
o Paid health insurance (medical, dental, vision and prescription),
holidays and personal leave

Location:
The Technicians will be based out of the BLM Southern Nevada District
office, which is located in northwest Las Vegas, NV. The Southern Nevada
District Office manages more than three million acres of Mojave Desert in
Clark and Nye counties. The scenery varies from dramatically colorful
geologic landforms and largely unspoiled panoramic vistas of Red Rock
Canyon National Conservation Area to remote and rugged wild landscapes of
Gold Butte Back Country Byway. Recreation opportunities abound and viewing
sites for desert plants and animals are easily accessible.

Qualifications:
Technical requirements:
o Educational and field experiences related to archaeology, anthropology,

or indigenous peoples studies – in particular, historic and prehistoric
Mojave archaeology;
o Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct and
assess the condition of archeological site surveys (e.g.: mapping, data
recording, site photography, GPSing, figuring out location of and routes in
to and out of survey site, and drawing artifacts or structures as needed);
o Experience using ArcGIS 10.x;
o Experience operating hand-held GPS units for navigation and electronic
field data collection (previous experience operating Trimble units a plus);
o Experience preparing, reviewing and documenting archeological fieldwork,
excavations or historical properties;
o Ability to read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a
compass;
o Previous experience working with the BLM, or working in the Mojave region
desirable; and
o Desire to assist with site forms, collecting and cataloging field data,
coding sheets, slides, photographs and narrative data to ensure that field
data relationships are catalogued, maintained, and entered into appropriate
databases.

Additional requirements:
o Ability to work independently to accomplish project goals and to
communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse public;
o Possess good organizational skills and balance competing tasks;
o Ability to operate basic computer equipment, including scanners, and
Microsoft Office programs, including Access;
o Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans
and schedules;
o Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record;
o Experience safely operating 4WD trucks on and off paved roads, including
narrow and steep forest roads, and conducting routine vehicle maintenance;
and
o Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all
types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40
pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition.
o Successful applicant(s) must also complete a Department of Interior (DOI)
Background Investigation (BI); applicants already in possession of a fully
adjudicated DOI BI should highlight this in their cover letter.
