Job Summary
AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented and hardworking Archaeological Crew Chief for immediate employment in the Germantown, MD office. The Archaeological Crew Chief will provide field and lab support to cultural resource projects throughout the US and potentially international work, as available. The Archaeologist will have knowledge of field excavation techniques, ability to use (and instruct others in the use of) technology, the ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts, and be able to properly fill out field and laboratory forms and assist in report preparation. In the field, the Archaeologist will perform excavation of STPs, test units, and features, as well as mapping and documentation, and be able to lead small field crews of field technicians under the direction of the Field Director or Principal Investigator. This position supports Phase I, II, and III field and lab studies.
This position may include extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving wheelbarrows filled with dirt. The Archaeologist should have the ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs. and must have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions. This is a part-time variable position, meaning work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
* Performs archaeological fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and documentation, including field logs and progress reports
* Leads crews under direction of Field Director and Principal Investigator, including assisting in the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods
* Assists in writing archaeological reports and/or preparing archaeological site forms
* Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet AECOM quality standards
* Responsible for supporting supervisors as needed on a project basis- this could include providing graphic support, writing, project/paperwork organizational support, and pulling together the equipment for field projects, as directed by supervisors
* Ensures communication with PI/PM, Field Director, and lab on a project basis
* Ensures project staff is following lab protocols
* Mentors new/inexperienced staff in proper field or lab methods, as directed by supervisors
* Follows AECOM corporate P&P, including safety plans
* Assumes personal responsibility for furthering education and/or capabilities to ensure career growth (with support and guidance from supervisors)
Minimum Requirements
* Bachelors degree in Anthropology or in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
* Must have successfully completed course work at an accredited archaeological field school
* 5+ years of experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology
* Must be well versed in standard archaeological techniques to include the excavation of shovel test pits (STPs) and test units for all phases of archaeological investigations
* Must be prepared for field, lab, and office tasks, including basic data analysis and report writing
* Travel will be required as field projects could be located anywhere in the United States
* Must possess a valid driver’s license
* A writing sample may be required
Preferred Qualifications
* Prior experience as Senior Field Technician or Crew Chief
* Experience with Global Positioning System (GPS), Total Station, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, etc.
