Working collaboratively with the BLM Elko District, the Great Basin
Institute is recruiting an Archaeologist to support cultural resource
management initiatives on the district. Work will include field surveys and
inventories, as well as NEPA documentation and reporting. Specifically,
tasks will include:
• Completing literature searches and using the NV Cultural Resources
Information System to complete Class I inventories
• Determining project cultural needs and completing Cultural Resource
Inventory Needs Assessments using the information collected during Class I
inventories
• Completing field visits and Class II and Class III surveys
• Compiling Class I inventory and Class II or Class III survey information
to assist in writing survey reports and drafting Cultural Resources
sections in NEPA documents
• Preparing for Interdisciplinary Team project meetings by reviewing
materials provided by the project lead prior to the meeting and completing
a preliminary records search of the project area
• Properly filing cultural documents to help maintain adequate records
• Drafting letters for the BLM Archeologist for submittal to the Nevada
State Historic Preservation
Office
• Assisting the BLM Archeologist with record maintenance, including
verification of geospatial data for previous projects and report
digitization.
• Researching Cultural Resources Management laws and regulations for
Section 106 compliance and agreement documents

Compensation, Benefits & Timeline:
• Rate of Pay: $21.00/hour
• Benefits: Health insurance (medical, dental and vision) and paid

• Timeline: 40-week appointment beginning in February 2017, or upon
availability and adjudication of a Department of Interior Background
Investigation. Potential for extension pending funding availability and
positive performance review.

Location:
The BLM Elko District in northeastern Nevada encompasses over 7 million
acres located within the Great Basin ecoregion, which is generally
characterized by a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters.
Elko is approximately 230 miles west of Salt Lake City, UT, 295 miles
northeast of Reno, NV, and 255 miles south of Boise, ID.

Qualifications:
Technical requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Cultural Resources Management or allied
discipline;
• Educational and field experiences related to archaeology; familiarity
with historic and prehistoric Great Basin archaeology preferred;
• A minimum of 1 year of experience and understanding of the proper steps
required to conduct archeological site surveys and assess site condition,
desired (e.g., mapping, data recording, site photography, routing access to
survey sites, and drawing artifacts, structures, and sketch maps as
needed);
• Experience using ArcGIS 10.x and operating hand-held GPS units for
navigation and electronic field data collection (previous experience
operating Trimble units a plus);

• Experience preparing, reviewing and documenting archeological fieldwork,
excavations and/or historical properties;
• Ability to read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a
compass;
• Prior experience interpreting and or preparing documents for NEPA, CEQA,
or related environmental policy highly desirable;
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to
effectively communicate in an Interdisciplinary Team setting, and educate a
diverse public on BLM land management (multiple-use) principles and
cultural resource management concepts;
• Experience conducting research and literature reviews, reviewing and
drafting technical reports, and document editing; and
• Previous experience working with the BLM and/or working in the Central
Great Basin region highly desirable.

Additional requirements:
• Ability to work independently and in a team setting to accomplish project
goals;
• Possess good organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines and
produce professional deliverables including draft documents for team review;
• Ability to operate basic computer equipment, including scanners, and
Microsoft Office programs;
• Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans
and schedules;
• Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record

with experience safely operating 4WD trucks on and off paved roads,
including narrow and steep forest roads, and conducting routine vehicle
maintenance;
• Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all
types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40
pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition; and
• Complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI).
